America’s Oldest Lightest Shines On for Guests of Amelia Island Hotels

Guests of Amelia Island Hotels enjoy one of the most historic landmarks in America – the Amelia Island lighthouse, perched high on a bluff above Egans Creek, not far from some of the finest Amelia Island Hotels.

Although St. Augustine is Florida’s oldest city, Amelia Island has claim to the oldest lighthouse in the state. St. Augustine is actually the oldest continuously occupied city in the entire United States, dating back to 1565. However, the first St. Augustine lighthouse crashed into the sea around 1880. The Amelia Island lighthouse in Fernandina Beach, Florida, close to some of the most popular Amelia Island Hotels, was built in 1839.

Besides being the oldest lighthouse in Florida, the Amelia Island lighthouse is one of only two remaining lighthouses in the state designed by Winslow Lewis, the renowned American lighthouse builder. Guests of Amelia Island Hotels have enjoyed this historic landmark for decades.

The Amelia Island lighthouse’s signature is a flash every 10 seconds, and can actually be seen from some of the Amelia Island Hotels. In the southeast quadrant, there is also a red sector that creates a red flash to warn boaters of the dangerous shoals on the south end of Amelia Island, where there were many shipwrecks in the late 1800s. The flash of the lighthouse on Amelia Island can be seen about 16 nautical miles, and guests of many Amelia Island Hotels thrill to the sight.

Guests of Amelia Island Hotels Enjoy a Natural Paradise

Thirteen miles long and two miles wide, Amelia Island is a destination that defines the natural beauty of Florida: white-sand beaches, radiant sunshine and majestic blue herons soaring overhead. And guests of Amelia Island Hotels come back again and again to bask in its brilliance.

But Amelia Island is also the perfect place for fun and adventure. Guests of Amelia Island Hotels visit Kelly Seahorse Ranch and enjoy the scenery, the fantastic beaches and the beauty of the ocean by horseback.

Guests of Amelia Island Hotels also frequent the Amelia Island Museum of History, where they can take walking tours up Historic Centre Street and into the Silk Stocking District to see the many great historical figures who influenced the architecture and business on Amelia Island.

Guests of Amelia Island Hotels can explore Fort Clinch, one of the most well-preserved 19th century forts in the country.

One of the foremost Amelia Island Hotels – The Amelia Island Plantation -- offers Nature Center Programs that include light hikes or bike tours where you can discover birds, turtles, edible plants, night creatures and crabs.
